Dallas in having an infestation of forest tree caterpillars right now. You will see these beautiful 1 1/2 inch caterpillars especiallya round oak trees – both live oaks and the large-leaf oaks. Unlike the common tent caterpillar you will see later in the summer, that makes the dense web at the outer ends of branches, often in pecan trees, these tent caterpillars make their webs on the trunks. And while they do eat the new growth leaves, our oaks seem to be adaptable to these pests and do not sustain serious damage. This years infestation is larger and more pronounced than most years.
